Chautauqa Creek

did not disappoint.  Tons of fish, few fisherman, and great conditions added up to a great week of fishing.

The story of the week was a big steelie after a five minute fight went under a thin, 20 foot downed tree.  I had to lift the tree to free the fish.  He went back under it again, near the base and I could not lift it, so I jammed my rod under the tree and pulled the rod out of the other side.  The fish was still on.  He did it a third time in the thin end and the line got hung up on a small branch from the tree.  I lifted the tree again, dislodged it, but the branch stayed on.  The fish, the branch, and I broke the pool, went down stream where I corralled the fish, the branch, and a huge piece of bark that acted like a flasher on a downrigger.  The most bizarre landing in 41 yrs of fly fishing.  Loved every minute of it.
