Chautauqa Creek

did not disappoint.  Tons of fish, few fisherman, and great conditions added up to a great week of fishing.

The story of the week was a big steelie after a five minute fight went under a thin, 20 foot downed tree.  I had to lift the tree to free the fish.  He went back under it again, near the base and I could not lift it, so I jammed my rod under the tree and pulled the rod out of the other side.  The fish was still on.  He did it a third time in the thin end and the line got hung up on a small branch from the tree.  I lifted the tree again, dislodged it, but the branch stayed on.  The fish, the branch, and I broke the pool, went down stream where I corralled the fish, the branch, and a huge piece of bark that acted like a flasher on a downrigger.  The most bizarre landing in 41 yrs of fly fishing.  Loved every minute of it. Chautauqua Creek

was  my goal, my license finally kicked in.  Got there at 5:30,  but had to wait almost forty five minutes to fish due to cloud cover.  When the sun came up I got a run on my first and second casts, which I promptly lost.  Day light arrived and it was a circus, catching  fish one after another all in the same small hole.  I took the fish out of the hole, downstream, to land them as not to scare the remaining fish there.  I quit around nine thirty.  The water is very low and clear, but the reason I came home was to stock the club tomorrow.

My dream came true

when I got up from my cabin, drove 35 min to Sixteen Mile Run and had a great day of fishing to boot.

Got there before dawn and fished in the dark to no avail.  When the sun came up the fish turned on and I caught my first steelie of the year on my center pin.  The fishing only got better and better and the 3 guys in the hole I fished with all caught a bunch of fish, including some doubles.  It was just an awesome day.

Got up the following morning for a repeat, and just the opposite happened.  A complete bust at 16, Elk, and Walnut.  Saw fish caught on Elk in the mud hole, mostly on spinners.   The place was packed as was the nut and 16.  As good as my first day was, the second was just plain….bad.

But the goal of getting up, driving a half hour, coming home to a hot lunch and not driving 3 hrs home was so cool.

It was pouring in Erie, the run is on for 2012 for sure.
